SELF-HEALING MATERIALS
The inspiration for Nissan's new self-healing paint coming from the unlikeliest place- the shell of a lobster. The self-healing coating uses a material called Chitosan, which is derived from Chitin, the main component of the exoskeleton of lobsters and other crustaceans. When this is used in paints, and when the paint is scratched, the chemical structure of the paint is damaged and the chitosan can respond to the UV Rays in the sunlight, which forms chemical chains that replace the gap of paint that has been scratched off. This process can only take an hour and can be used for everything from tanks to aircraft.
This video shows Nissan's self-healing paint.
